In 1981, the Coalition established the 24-hour, toll-free, statewide
Domestic Violence Hotline that assists more than 20,000 victims of
domestic violence, service providers and the general public annually
through the provision of information, referrals, crisis intervention
services and technical assistance. Through the hotline, the Coalition
acts as a clearinghouse of information for women who are abused and
their children and for domestic violence programs throughout New York
State.
In 2006, in collaboration with the New York State Coalition Against Sexual Assault, the Hotline was expanded to address the needs of the sexual assault community. Today the Hotline is the NYS Domestic & Sexual Violence Hotline. The hotline is staffed by individuals thoroughly trained in all
aspects of domestic violence and sexual assault, including, but not limited to:
crisis intervention, dynamics of domestic violence, safety planning,
services and community resources offered within localities statewide,
public assistance, issues impacting underserved communities, legal
and criminal justice issues, health/medical issues, batterers programs,
systems advocacy, offender accountability initiatives, and national
services for victims. Additionally, staff is trained in counseling
skills. The hotline often serves as a point of entry into the
network of services for women who are abused and their children.
Hotline counselors may advocate for victims of domestic violence
who have experienced roadblocks to receiving services or are
experiencing potentially dangerous practices by service
providers.
Coalition staff are experienced in dealing with a variety of
complex situations, and are in a pivotal position to provide
programs and professionals with critical information on various
issues ranging from legislation, TANF re-authorization, mandatory
arrests, child custody issues, issues affecting women of color,
domestic violence and chemical dependency, and locating out-of-state
shelters for women fleeing their abusers. Hotline counselors are
able to assist non-English speakers through the Language
Line.
The Hotline produces and disseminates the New York State Directory
of Domestic Violence Services and the Domestic Violence Handbook,
in print and on compact disc. The Hotline also distributes a
range of resource and educational materials produced by other
organizations including palm cards, radar cards, checklists,
bilingual brochures, domestic violence information packets, and
posters.
