* Below are some examples of tactics used by
individuals to exert power and control over their intimate partners. This
should not be considered a complete or comprehensive list.
Types of Abuse
Exploiting Disability Status; Withholding medication or medical care. Breaking
adaptive equipment (teletypewriter, etc.). Accentuating victim's dependence and
vulnerability.
Exploiting Immigration Status; Threatening to report to Immigration officials.
Hiding or destroying important papers. Not allowing victim to learn English.
Exploiting Power as Police Officer; Constant presence of weapons in the home.
Exploiting knowledge of the criminal justice system. Pitting victim's word
against officer.
Exploiting Power as Military Officer; Leaving no allotments during deployment.
Controlling access to victim's military ID card. Emphasizing training to kill and
maim. Cleaning weapons in front of victim.
Exploiting Technology; Tracking victim's activities using global positioning
systems (GPS), SpyWare, phone taps, or other technology. Impersonating or
manipulating files. Obtaining online account information and passwords
through children.
Exploiting Addiction; Physically abusing for getting high/not getting high.
Preventing from attending drug treatment and/or Alcoholics Anonymous/Narcotics
Anonymous meetings. Forcing victim to prostitute for drugs or drug money.
Minimizing, Denying, and Blaming; Making light of the abuse. Saying the abuse
did not happen. Shifting responsibility for the abuse to the victim.
Physical Violence; Slapping. Hitting. Strangling. Punching.
Beating. Killing.
Sexual Violence; Forcing sexual intercourse or contact. Forcing partner
to view pornography. Withholding sex.
Using Children; Using visitation to harass victim. Threatening to
kidnap the children. Threatening to report to Child Protective Services (CPS).
Making the victim feel guilty about the children.
Using Coercion and Threats; Making or carrying out threats to hurt the victim.
Threatening to leave, commit suicide. Making the victim do illegal acts.
Using Cultural Privilege; Exploiting cultural norms, rituals, values,
language, traditions, dances, and art to maintain power and control.
Using Intimidation; Making the victim afraid by using looks or actions.
Smashing things. Abusing pets. Displaying Weapons.
Using Emotional Abuse; Putting down the victim. Name-calling. Playing mind
games. Humiliating.
Using Racial Privilege; Calling the victim a "snitch" for contacting the police.
Denying the existence of racism. Denying the prevalence of violence against
women of color.
Using Economic Abuse; Controlling the family finances. Withholding money for
groceries or family necessities. Making the victim beg for money. Prohibiting the
victim from getting a job.
Using Elder Abuse; Takes walker, wheelchair, glasses. Does not report
medical problems. Misleads family members. Abuses power of attorney.
Using Teen Violence; Threatening to spread rumors to peer group.
Controlling what the victim does. Stalking through social networking sites or
text messaging.
Using Isolation; Controlling the victim's contact with friends and family.
Limiting outside involvement. Using jealousy to justify actions.
Using Male Privilege; Treating her like a servant. Making all of the big
decisions. Being the one to define men's and women's roles.
Using Heterosexual Privilege; Exploiting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual,
Transgender, or Queer (LGBTQ) identity. Threatening to "out" the victim.
Controlling expression of sexual identity.
Using Religious Privilege; Threatening "god-ordained" beating.
Prohibiting the victim from religious practice. Manipulating religious texts to
support power and control.
