X-WR-CALDESC:The coronavirus pandemic has underscored the deep\, longstandi
ng inequities in our nation’s disaster housing response and recovery syste
 m. From Hurricane Katrina\, Hurricane Maria\, and Hurricane Harvey to the
most recent disasters\, including Hurricane Laura\, the Iowa derecho\, and
California wildfires\, one thing is clear: our disaster housing recovery
framework is broken\, exacerbating and reinforcing racial\, income\, and a
ccessibility inequalities at each stage of response and recovery.\n\nFeder
al disaster housing recovery efforts must be redesigned to ensure a comple
te and equitable recovery for our nation’s lowest-income and most marginal
ized disaster survivors\, including seniors\, people living with disabilit
ies\, people experiencing homelessness\, and others. These individuals are
often hardest hit\, have the fewest resources\, and face the steepest pat
h to recovery.\n\nThe NLIHC-led Disaster Housing Recovery Coalition of mor
e than 850 local\, state\, and national organizations working in disaster
recovery released a two-part report\, “Fixing America’s Broken Disaster Ho
using Recovery System\,” outlining the barriers to a complete and equitabl
e disaster recovery and recommendations for policy reform. The report – de
veloped by NLIHC and the Fair Share Housing Center of New Jersey – was cre
ated during a convening of housing\, homelessness\, research\, civil right
s\, fair housing\, and legal experts working in disaster areas and calls f
or both ambitious and common-sense reforms to ensure disaster recovery ser
vices and funding reach those most in need. \n\nLearn about the report’s
