Use Social Media Platforms to Advocate for DV Survivors

On Tuesday, February 23, 2021, domestic violence advocates, survivors and allies will call on New York State lawmakers to increase funding for domestic violence services across the State.

For this year’s Virtual Budget Advocacy Day, we are asking the Governor and the New York State Legislature to:

  • Create a $10 million emergency fund to ensure the sustainability of New York’s domestic violence services during the Pandemic. Due to New York’s outdated method for supporting domestic violence services, there is actually less money available for such services now than there was before the Pandemic began. In fact, New York’s domestic violence programs are losing approximately $1 million a month in revenues because fewer survivors are choosing to enter shelter during the public health crisis.
  • Maintain a $5 million re-appropriation in the Aid to Localities Budget for OCFS to pilot a new flexible funding model that reduces the barriers and challenges for domestic violence service providers assisting survivors.
  • Increase TANF set aside for non-residential domestic violence services to $6 million. New York’s non-residential DV services include telephone hotlines, information and referral services, counseling, legal advocacy, and financial empowerment. The current $3 million set aside in the State Budget was set 20 years ago and has never increased even though demand for services has increased.
  • Restore $2,356,000 for domestic violence programs and legal services for domestic violence victims. For several years, the Legislature has restored proposals to eliminate $2,356,000 in the DCJS Aid to Localities budget.

We call on the New York State Assembly and Senate to uphold their commitment to supporting domestic violence survivors and programs.
