April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

April marks Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) Month, a time to uplift the power of families, communities, and systems working together to ensure all children grow up safe, supported, and able to thrive.

This year, we join partners across New York State and the nation—including Prevent Child Abuse New York (PCANY) and Prevent Child Abuse America—in recognizing that prevention is possible when families are strong, connected, and resourced.

Throughout April, initiatives like Pinwheels of Possibility serve as visible reminders of the bright futures we can build when we invest in children and families before challenges escalate.

Strengthening Families, Supporting Children

Children flourish when families have access to the support they need—when they need it. Positive childhood experiences, including nurturing relationships, safe environments, and stable support systems, are critical to healthy development and long-term well-being.

These protective factors not only help children thrive, but also reduce the impacts of adversity and trauma.

At NYSCADV, we recognize that:

  • Prevention is not the responsibility of families alone

  • Strong communities and accessible services are essential

  • Policies must prioritize early support, not just crisis response

Ensuring that every child grows up in a supportive environment requires collective commitment—from advocates, service providers, policymakers, and communities alike.

Prevention is a Shared Responsibility

Preventing child abuse means investing in the conditions that allow families to succeed. This includes:

  • Access to affordable childcare

  • Economic stability and financial empowerment

  • Paid family leave and workplace protections

  • Community-based services that meet families where they are

Yet, across the country, prevention remains underfunded compared to intervention. Shifting this balance is critical to building a primary prevention ecosystem that addresses challenges before harm occurs.

Taking Action Together

CAP Month is not only a time for awareness—it is a call to action.

On April 14, 2026, individuals and organizations nationwide will participate in Digital Action Day, an opportunity to advocate for policies that prioritize children and families. We encourage advocates across New York State to engage with local, state, and federal leaders to support investments in prevention and family-strengthening initiatives.

You can also:

  • Share resources and information within your community

  • Support local organizations working with families

  • Advocate for policies that center prevention and equity

Hope, Prevention, and Community

At its core, prevention is about hope—the belief that every child deserves a future filled with safety, opportunity, and care.

At NYSCADV, we are committed to:

  • Strengthening family resilience

  • Supporting positive childhood experiences

  • Collaborating with partners to expand access to resources

This work is both practical and deeply human. It requires us to meet families with compassion, to address systemic barriers, and to invest in solutions that create lasting change.

Join Us

This April, we reaffirm our commitment to building a world where:

  • Families are supported

  • Communities are connected

  • Children can thrive

Because when families have what they need, children don’t just survive—they flourish.

Let’s continue building that future together.
