Dear Friends and Allies:

We know that there are a lot of Big Things happening today in the world and your communities, and that these events, good and bad, are what will shape the world for the next generations. Something we've learned through our interactions with each of you is that every Big Thing is woven out of thousands of smaller stories: the volunteer nurse who prepares meals and monitors symptoms at a homeless encampment relocated by COVID-19, or refugees ramping up to test for COVID. The conviction and actions of individuals like them form the heart of our most powerful movements, but their stories are among the first to be obscured by history.

On Wednesday, August 19th at 4:30pm PST/7:30pm EST we invite you to take a moment with us to remember the essential stories that shaped the conflicts that shook post-colonial Punjab, captured by our friend Mallika Kaur in her new book, Faith, Gender, and Activism in the Punjab Conflict: The Wheat Fields Still Whisper. During this virtual session, Mallika will read passages from the book and answer your questions about how she went about collecting endangered accounts; what she learnt in the process about a feminist/gendered approach to studying conflicts and movements in South Asia; and how she relates this work to the present moment: what are the lessons for citizen-activism in 2020? We hope that you will join us for this opportunity to connect, dialogue, and reflect!
