The Impact of Trauma on the Brain

Why is it that, after a car accident, we may not remember exactly what happened, but we remember the smell of burnt rubber from squealing tires? Or after a violent assault, we may not remember the order of events, but we remember the pattern on the carpet as we were held down against our will? The brain is a complex and powerful tool that processes and stores information and memories. When memories are scary or violent, our brains begin to process that information in a different way to maximize our ability to survive and thrive. Understanding how a traumatized brain functions is vital when working with victims of violent crime. This webinar will discuss the brain's basic structures and functions, how trauma affects our natural memory processing mechanisms, and methods to effectively communicate with traumatized individuals.
